Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Everyone's Irish today!

In honor of St. Patrick's day, we decided to make green velvet cupcakes today at Pastrygirl.
Aren't they lovely?

We just substituted green food coloring for red (or for us, actually we use beet juice)
Here is the batter ready to go

Out of the oven and waiting to be frosted

All done and ready to sell! Topped with cream cheese frosting.

We also had stout cupcakes with Irish cream buttercream and shortbread shamrocks!

Cupcake Liner Flowers

Ever have extra cupcake papers after baking a batch of delicious cupcakes and wonder what to do with them? Make flowers! I found this idea online and had to give it a try. Here is a tutorial for you all to try

Here are the supplies you will need; cupcake liners-about six or eight per flower, pipe cleaners-any color will do, florist tape, a straight pin or large safety pin.

First take six or eight liners and stack them

Flatten them all with you hand

Using a straight pin or safety pin, poke two sets of holes through the stack

Begin threading a pipe cleaner through one set of holes. I did one liner at a time, but you could try more if you are brave

Once you have them all threaded, fold the end of the pipe cleaner and thread back down the other set of holes

Pull tight and twist underneath to keep tight

Wrap the pipe cleaner with florist tape. For a single stem, I suggest wrapping the entire thing. If you are going to put together a bouquet, you only need to wrap about halfway down and then once you have all of your stems together, you can wrap the remainder

Beginning with the very top liner, start pinching the papers together at the base. Do this with every liner

And there you go! Easy right?

Have fun!

Dia De Los Muertes

Day of the Dead, or in Spanish Día de los Muertos, is a holiday celebrated by many in Mexico and by some Mexican Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration typically occurs in November but we have done two weddings with this theme so far this year. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. Some may think skulls at a wedding are a bit odd, but when you look at the deeper meaning, it is quite beautiful, to celebrate loved ones you have lost.

Here are some white chocolate molds we made as cupcake toppers for a wedding

we then added small flowers for the eyes to make them even more festive

the flavors for the cupcakes were coconut with cream cheese frosting and spicy chocolate with cream cheese frosting

I didn't get any photos of the cupcakes placed on the tower at the reception as I didn't go set them up. Once Pastrygirl posts them, I will add them on. We also did a small fondant covered cake in hot pink and the bride and groom provided a topper.

Next are some pictures I found online. There is nothing better than finding amazing inspiration! These are some great sugar cookies

and a beautiful wedding cake

not all Day of the Dead decor is colorful

Can skulls really be cute?? Yes they can! This topper is adorable

and I couldn't resist showing these, amazing!

Cake Contributions

I thought I would share some great cakes with you all that I helped with. Most of the work was done by THE pastrygirl herself, owner of Pastrygirl, and my mentor, Laura Widener. I just helped on some small details, but am nonetheless proud of the small role I played in each piece :)

Here is a lovely pumpkin patch. The "dirt" is actually cookie crumbs. I helped make the pumpkins and the leaves.

So cute, this little girl loved vegetable gardens and so wanted one for her birthday cake. I made the tomatoes.

We had never heard of Wow Wow Wubbzy until a customer requested a cake with the character...I made the tiny bird on top and covered the 3 shaped rice crispy treat with fondant.

This was a 40th birthday cake-you can barely read the message on top of the stump, but that's how they wanted it, very subtle so the birthday boy wouldn't freak out any more about turning the big 4-0. I made most of the mushrooms, except for the ones actually on the stump.

Marzipan ferns that I made for an amazing winter wedding cake.

The cake all put together. I also sugared the rosemary and covered the cakeboard with marzipan, ran some lines over it to resemble wood, then brushed on cocoa powder for a little dimension.

This was for the gingerbread house competition at the Providence Festival of Trees last December. I made the little stockings and rolled out the "gingerbread" and cut out the tiny gingerbread men. Let me tell you, that was not easy to get them so small!

Here is a look at the entire thing. I wish I could have contributed more, but alas, most of the work was done on a snowy day when I couldn't get down to work!

Our entry won the People's Choice Award!
We are already brainstorming ideas for next year's entry...

Even though my contributions may be small, I felt very proud :)

Accessories Addict

This not eating sweets thing is killing me...only 44 days to go...oh lord...

Something not-edible that looks good enough to eat, are treat inspired accessories. I LOVE accessories, ask anyone...they know. And what better way to accessorize than with baked goods???

Here is my jewelry collection of sweets

can you spot the cupcakes?

I've had these popsicle earrings since I was little. There used to be a matching necklace but I do not know where it has gone

Small stud earrings on a bed of colored sugar

Little cupcakes like chocolate as much as I do!

This necklace I got at Forever 21 for a whopping $1.50! Crazy steal!

The donut was originally a cell phone charm but I converted it to necklace form

Now you can have your cake and wear it too!
